What Is An Artifact?
An artifact is an object created or modified by human craftsmanship, distinguishing itself from the natural environment. Examples include items such as tools, weapons, jewelry, and even toys. Artifacts can be complex in their design and function, but are usually simple.
Most often, when archaeologists refer to an artifact, it is an item of historical or cultural importance. A twentieth century miner’s pickaxe is as much an artifact as a prehistoric arrowhead.
